Australia widens teen social media ban to YouTube, scraps exemption

Australia will now include YouTube in its upcoming ban on social media access for teenagers under 16, reversing an earlier decision to exempt the platform. The change follows concerns raised by the country’s internet regulator, citing a survey where 37% of minors reported harmful content on YouTube.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated the move is about protecting children and supporting parents, emphasizing that social media companies have a responsibility to reduce harm.

YouTube argued it shouldn’t be classified as social media, calling itself a video-sharing platform. However, critics point out its interactive features and content algorithm resemble other banned platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat.

The decision may lead to a legal challenge from YouTube’s parent company, Alphabet, which previously clashed with Australia over digital regulation.

The ban, set to take effect in December, requires platforms to take “reasonable steps” to block access for users under 16 or face fines up to AU$49.5 million. A government report on age-verification tools is expected soon and will guide enforcement.
