Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that Australia will formally recognize a Palestinian state at the 80th UN General Assembly in September.
Framing the move as part of a coordinated global push for a two-state solution, Albanese said the decision followed talks with leaders from Britain, France, New Zealand, Japan, as well as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The Palestinian Authority has pledged to recognize Israel’s right to exist, hold elections, and demilitarize.
Albanese criticized Israel’s withholding of aid to Gaza and rising settler violence in the West Bank, warning that current actions and the humanitarian crisis risk making a two-state solution unattainable for a generation. The announcement comes amid increased calls from his government for a ceasefire in the Israel–Hamas conflict.
