China Calls for Shared Future with Pacific Islands at Key Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

At the Third China-Pacific Island Countries (PICs) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for building a China-PICs community with a shared future. Co-chairing the meeting with Kiribati’s President Taneti Maamau in Xiamen, Wang proposed six key principles: mutual respect, development cooperation, people-centered governance, mutual learning, fairness, and solidarity. He reaffirmed China’s support for PICs’ sovereignty and non-interference in their internal affairs. Wang highlighted plans to deepen Belt and Road cooperation, expand trade, agriculture, and tourism ties, and implement 200 livelihood projects along with sending medical teams. Marking 50 years of diplomatic ties with the PICs, Wang emphasized their growing strategic partnership and mutual benefits. Pacific Island leaders expressed appreciation for China’s long-term support, reaffirmed their commitment to the one-China principle, and voiced interest in further cooperation on infrastructure, climate action, and regional development.
