A powerful earthquake with a preliminary death toll of at least 296 struck Morocco’s High Atlas mountains, causing widespread destruction. Most casualties occurred in remote mountainous areas. The quake, measuring 7.2 in magnitude according to Morocco’s geophysical center (6.8 according to the U.S. Geological Survey), hit the Ighil area, 70 kilometers southwest of Marrakech. Buildings collapsed in Marrakech’s UNESCO World Heritage site, and a mosque minaret fell. The quake was also felt in major cities like Rabat and Casablanca. Currently, 153 people are reported injured.
