Astronomers finally detect a rocky planet with an atmosphere
Astronomers have identified a rocky exoplanet beyond our solar system, named 55 Cancri e or Janssen, with an atmosphere, a rarity among such planets. However, this super-Earth, larger than our planet but smaller than Neptune, is inhospitable, with a surface of molten rock and scorching temperatures. It orbits very close to its star, completing an orbit every 18 hours, resulting in extreme heat. Despite its unsuitability for life, the planet’s atmosphere, likely rich in carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide, presents an opportunity for further understanding of exoplanetary atmospheres. The discovery marks progress in exoplanet exploration, although the search for habitable worlds continues.
