The PlayStation 5 game Astro Bot won Game of the Year at The Game Awards on Friday, beating five nominees, including Black Myth: Wukong, the first Chinese game nominated in the top category. Developed by Sony’s Team ASOBI, Astro Bot follows a robot on a space adventure and was created by a small team over three and a half years.
The win sparked debate among gamers, with some criticizing the decision due to the game’s lower sales and perceived lack of creativity compared to Black Myth: Wukong. Despite not winning Game of the Year, Black Myth: Wukong earned Best Action Game and the Players’ Voice Award, boasting over 22.5 million copies sold and $1.1 billion in revenue.
The Game Awards, established in 2014 by journalist Geoff Keighley, celebrates achievements in the video game industry.
