The fourth Winter Youth Olympic Games commenced with its opening ceremony in South Korea’s Gangwon province. South Korea is the first non-European host of the winter youth Olympics. The two-week event will feature 15 disciplines across seven sports, with around 1,900 athletes aged 14 to 18 from approximately 80 countries and regions. The slogan for the Games is “Grow together. Shine forever.” Ice hockey player Zhang Jingyue carried the flag for the Chinese delegation, which includes 56 athletes. Eileen Gu, a double Olympic champion, serves as the Global Ambassador for Gangwon 2024. The Games will see the debut of young athletes from Algeria, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates. Many venues from the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games will be used for this youth event. The Winter Youth Olympics will run until February 1.
