China’s U23 team reached the final of the AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia in January, marking the first time in 22 years a Chinese men’s team advanced to an international final. Millions in China watched the team beat Vietnam 3-0 in the semi-final, with celebrations drawing attention from global stars including Neymar Jr., Alessandro Costacurta, Petr Čech, and Michael Owen.
Despite losing 4-0 to Japan in the final, the tournament highlighted China’s emerging football talent. Coach Antonio Puche praised the discipline and potential of the players, pointing to investments in stadiums, grassroots programs, and school football initiatives. Rising stars include defensive midfielder Xu Bin, who signed with Wolverhampton Wanderers, and goalkeeper Li Hao, trained in Madrid. Puche sees the next generation as talented and aims for Olympic qualification in 2028 and World Cup participation in 2030.
