Asia News Wrap: Thailand to get new prime minister, and more

Thailand: The Thai parliament will vote for a new prime minister on Friday after the constitutional court removed PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra. The ruling Pheu Thai Party has nominated veteran lawyer Chaikasem Nitisiri, while the opposition Bhumjaithai Party backs its leader, Anutin Charnvirakul.

China: During a military parade marking the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, China unveiled new defense equipment, including the DF-5C intercontinental ballistic missile, DF-61 long-range missile, unmanned underwater vehicles, and unmanned ships.

India: Flooding in northern India, caused by the swollen Yamuna River, has killed at least five people. Around 10,000 residents in Delhi were evacuated, as this year’s monsoon season continues to cause severe damage across the region.

South Korea: The Republic of Korea has suspended its military radio broadcast to North Korea, known as “Voice of Freedom,” in an effort to reduce tensions. This is the first suspension since the broadcast resumed 15 years ago.

Philippines: Up to 70 percent of government funds for flood-control projects, totaling as much as $2 billion, have been lost to corruption over the past two years, according to Finance Secretary Ralph Recto.
