Asia News Wrap: COVID-19 spreads in Southeast Asia, and more

Here are key stories from Asia this week:

  1. COVID-19 Surge in Southeast Asia:
     Cases are rising again across the region. Thailand reported over 28,000 cases in early June. Indonesia is seeing a rise driven by a more contagious but less deadly Omicron subvariant, while India recorded two new deaths in Delhi. Governments are urging caution and reinstating health protocols.
  2. Stampede in India:
     Eleven people died and dozens were injured in a stampede outside a stadium in Bengaluru, where fans had gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s first IPL title.
  3. Japan Enforces Heat Safety Laws:
     Japan will now fine companies up to ¥500,000 for failing to protect workers from extreme heat, following a rise in heatstroke-related deaths and injuries, especially in construction and manufacturing sectors.
  4. Vietnam Ends Two-Child Policy:
     In response to falling birth rates, Vietnam has scrapped its decades-old two-child limit to encourage population growth and address aging demographics.
  5. Taklimakan Rally Ends in Xinjiang:
     The 2025 Taklimakan Rally concluded with Martin Michek and Liu Yangui winning in the motorcycle and car categories. Yao Weiqiang won the inaugural New Energy Vehicle (NEV) race, highlighting the rally’s status as Asia’s top off-road event.
