American Bar Association sues Trump administration over law firm attacks

The American Bar Association (ABA) has filed a lawsuit in Washington, D.C., against the Trump administration, accusing it of intimidating law firms through executive orders. These orders allegedly punished firms by revoking security clearances, cutting federal contracts, and blocking access to government jobs and buildings. The ABA argues this has created a “chilling effect,” making lawyers afraid to take cases against the government due to fear of retaliation. The lawsuit claims these actions violate First Amendment rights, including free speech and the right to legal representation. It reflects growing conflict between the ABA and the Trump administration, which had already cut ABA funding and limited its influence over judicial nominations. Four law firms have also sued over the same orders, with three winning so far.
