On Tuesday, Amazon said it had thought about showing import tariffs on its low-cost shopping site Haul but denied any plans to do this on its main website, Amazon.com. This came after the White House accused Amazon of taking a political stance.
A news report from Punchbowl News claimed Amazon planned to show how tariffs, especially those from former President Trump’s trade policies, affected product prices. The report caused confusion and led to a 2% drop in Amazon’s stock.
The White House criticized the reported move, calling it “hostile and political.” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt questioned why Amazon didn’t do something similar during inflation under President Biden and encouraged Americans to “buy American.”
Amazon clarified that while it had briefly considered the idea for Haul, a site for cheap China-made products, it dropped the plan. Trump also called Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to complain, but later said Bezos had handled the issue properly.
Retailers like Best Buy have also expressed concern about rising costs from tariffs, which have especially affected Chinese imports since Trump began raising them.
