In China’s Qinling Mountains, researchers are using advanced AI-powered identification technology to aid wildlife conservation, particularly for endangered species like golden snub-nosed monkeys and vulnerable takins. Developed by Professor Guo Songtao’s team at Northwest University, the AI system uses single frames from extensive video footage to identify individual monkeys, track their genetic and group data, and monitor their health, such as seasonal weight changes. This technology is enhancing long-term ecological studies in the region, which is home to many protected species, including giant pandas, golden snub-nosed monkeys, takins, and crested ibises.
