In 2023, Kenyan engineer Jamlick Mwangi Kariuki returned to China to pursue a master’s degree in civil engineering after working on Kenya’s Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway, a key Belt and Road Initiative project. Kariuki is one of over 50,000 African students studying in China annually. China has trained more than 220,000 African professionals, helping African countries develop talent and promote sustainable development. Initiatives like the South-South Cooperation Institute, Luban Workshops, and the China-Africa Cooperation Vision 2035 focus on building skills in education, technology, and governance to support Africa’s growth and industrialization.
