Afghanistan hit by M5.6 earthquake after Sunday quake kills over 2,200

A magnitude-5.6 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on Thursday, centered 14 kilometers east of Jalalabad, Nangarhar province, at 4:56 p.m., the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km, while Germany’s GFZ Research Centre measured it at magnitude 6.2.

This follows a series of recent earthquakes in Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman, and Nuristan provinces, including a magnitude-6 quake on Sunday that caused widespread destruction. Official reports confirm over 2,200 deaths and more than 3,600 injuries, with rescue operations ongoing as the region remains on high alert.
