About 36,000 people gathered in Tokyo on Sunday to protest the government’s push to revise the country’s pacifist constitution and expand military capabilities.
The rally focused on opposition to proposed changes to Article 9 of Japan’s Constitution, as well as plans to increase defense spending, deploy long-range missiles, and ease restrictions on arms exports.
Protesters expressed concern that these moves under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s government could shift Japan away from its postwar pacifist stance. Demonstrations have also spread to other parts of the country, reflecting growing public unease over the security agenda.
