The death toll from a migrant boat capsizing off Yemen’s southern coast has reached 68, with 74 still missing. The boat, carrying 154 Ethiopian migrants, sank on the night of August 2 due to severe weather and strong winds near Abyan province. Twelve survivors were rescued and are receiving emergency treatment, some in critical condition.
Bodies have been found scattered along the coast, prompting expanded search and rescue efforts. All victims and survivors are Ethiopian, part of ongoing migration flows toward Yemen and Gulf countries despite the country’s conflict and humanitarian crisis.
Local officials called for urgent international cooperation to improve maritime safety and address the root causes of irregular migration. Humanitarian organizations, including the International Organization for Migration, are assisting in rescue operations amid continued rough sea conditions.
