An E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounder has caused 49 illnesses and one death in the U.S., according to the CDC. Most cases are in Colorado and Nebraska. Of the 28 cases with detailed information, 10 were hospitalized, and one developed a serious condition leading to kidney failure. The CDC suspects slivered onions used in the burgers as the source and is investigating further.
McDonald’s has removed slivered onions from affected areas and temporarily pulled the Quarter Pounder from restaurants in several states. McDonald’s shares dropped over 9% following the news.
