45 million more face hunger threat from extended Mideast war: UN

The United Nations warned Tuesday that if the Middle East war continues past June, an additional 45 million people could face acute hunger, pushing global food insecurity to a record high.

WFP deputy executive director Carl Skau said rising food and fuel prices from the conflict are already straining families worldwide. If oil prices stay above $100 a barrel, the total number of people facing acute hunger could reach nearly 320 million.

Skau emphasized that the impact falls hardest on the most vulnerable, who lack the means to cope with rising costs, and called for countries to provide more humanitarian support.
