The Macao SAR Electoral Affairs Commission announced early Monday that 26 candidates were preliminarily elected to the eighth Legislative Assembly through direct and indirect elections, held Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The new legislature will have 33 members: 14 directly elected, 12 indirectly elected, and seven appointed by the chief executive within 15 days of final results.
Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai congratulated the elected members and thanked voters, praising the electoral commission and public departments for ensuring a lawful, fair, and clean election. He highlighted the significance of this being the first election following last year’s amendments to the Legislative Assembly Election Law, which strengthened candidate qualification reviews and further implemented the principle of “patriots administering Macao.”
Sam emphasized that the election adhered to “One Country, Two Systems” and the Basic Law, safeguarding constitutional order and Macao’s autonomy. He pledged continued collaboration between the SAR government and Legislative Assembly to promote economic development, public well-being, and the steady implementation of Macao’s high degree of autonomy.
