25 US states sue Trump administration over Section 301 tariffs

A coalition of 25 U.S. states has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, arguing that President Donald Trump exceeded his authority by imposing new tariffs on imports from 60 trading partners. The states are seeking to have the tariffs blocked, declared unlawful, and refunded.

The lawsuit claims the administration improperly relied on Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 and forced-labor concerns to reinstate tariff measures that had previously been rejected by the Supreme Court. State officials, including leaders from New York and Oregon, argued that the tariffs would increase costs for consumers and businesses.

The White House defended the policy, maintaining that the tariffs are lawful and remain an effective trade tool. The case is the latest in a series of legal challenges to the administration’s trade policies.
