The 20th Asian Games officially opened in Japan on September 19 and will run until October 4. More than 11,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions are competing in 43 sports. The opening ceremony in Nagoya focused on the “Social Good Games” concept, with a simpler design and an emphasis on sustainability and giving athletes more time in the spotlight.
China sent 815 athletes to compete in 38 sports and 369 events. The team includes many young athletes, with 548 making their Asian Games debuts. Basketball player Hu Mingxuan and boxer Wu Yu served as China’s flag-bearers.
This year’s Games also feature several new sports and disciplines. Padel, teqball and surfing have been added, along with BMX freestyle, MMA and virtual taekwondo. Breaking and esports, which debuted at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, are also returning.
