The 2025 BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro marks a pivotal moment as Vietnam joins the bloc under a new “11+10” partnership, expanding its global influence. The coalition now represents nearly half the world’s population, one-third of global GDP, and over half of global economic growth. A major focus of the summit is global health reform, especially in addressing inequalities exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the stark vaccine access gap in Africa.
BRICS members are advancing initiatives like a partnership to eliminate socially-driven diseases and setting joint standards for AI in healthcare. China, the bloc’s largest economy, is shifting from one-time aid to systemic health cooperation, notably through partnerships with Brazil’s Fiocruz and Butantan Institutes. These collaborations have led to vaccine technology transfers and local production, offering a model for other developing countries.
The BRICS alliance is emerging as a leader in redefining global health governance, emphasizing inclusivity, technology sharing, and South-South cooperation to build a more equitable global health system.
