Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) lifted a tsunami early warning on Thursday after monitoring confirmed no significant sea level changes following a powerful magnitude-7.6 earthquake in eastern Maluku.
The quake, centered southeast of Bitung City in North Sulawesi, caused intense shaking lasting 10 to 20 seconds in Bitung and surrounding areas. A 70-year-old woman in Minahasa Regency was killed when debris from a collapsing building struck her. Two offshore aftershocks were also recorded, with preliminary reports indicating light to moderate damage in Ternate.
The tremors prompted widespread panic, with residents evacuating homes as social media circulated images of collapsed ceilings and warped building frames. Prior to the warning being lifted, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) had issued alerts, urging coastal residents to evacuate and avoid beaches and riverbanks while following official guidance.
