Myanmar Filmmakers and Experts Explore AI Co-Production at Yangon Panel Discussion

Local filmmakers, cultural experts, and industry professionals gathered at the China Cultural Center in Yangon on August 27 for an insightful panel discussion on cross-border creative collaboration and technological innovation. Co-hosted by China Media Group (CMG) and the China Cultural Center in Yangon, the panel focused on cultural exchange and the future of storytelling.

 

The panel opened with an in-depth review of the hit Chinese feature Dear You, which recently screened in theaters across Yangon and Mandalay. Made on a modest budget of 14 million RMB, the family drama achieved massive global commercial success, earning over 2 billion RMB in mainland China and 1 billion RMB internationally across Asian and Western markets.

Panelists highlighted how the film’s central themes of family affection and perseverance resonate deeply across different languages and cultural backgrounds.

Featured panelist and renowned Myanmar filmmaker Daw Swe Zin Htaik praised the film’s narrative depth, production quality, and authentic depiction of three generations within overseas Chinese communities.

Following Myanmar’s involvement in the Global AI Cooperation Agreement during the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, the discussion pivoted to artificial intelligence as an efficiency tool for future joint productions between CMG, the Ministry of Information, and local production houses.

Screenwriter U Hein Min Latt highlighted how AI tools assist in virtual production, digital visual effects, automated dubbing, localization, and short-form media marketing. Daw Swe Zin Htaik added that while AI significantly reduces time and labor costs, human creativity remains the true heart of cinema. She advocated for a human-AI collaboration model to overcome cultural gaps and streamline future translation and production workflows.

Panelists unanimously agreed that AI integration will help transition Myanmar-China audiovisual partnerships from simple film distribution toward co-creation, co-production, and joint international distribution.
