Israeli opposition leaders led by Gadi Eisenkot have pledged to form a new government as quickly as possible to remove Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, following last week’s inconclusive election. The opposition bloc secured 48 seats in parliament, compared with 53 for Netanyahu’s camp, leaving neither side with a clear majority. However, the leaders remain divided over whether to cooperate with Arab-majority parties, which won 19 seats and could help the opposition secure enough support to form a government.
The five opposition leaders agreed to pursue a government based on four principles outlined by Eisenkot, including recognition of Israel as a Jewish state and condemnation of Hamas as a terrorist organization. While some leaders support working with Arab lawmakers, others strongly oppose the idea. The disagreement has complicated efforts to build a coalition and avoid another election.
