China’s box office revenue has surpassed 31.5 billion yuan, or around 4.7 billion US dollars, as of October 26, including advance ticket sales, according to film data platform Maoyan. More than 400 films have been released in China this year, covering genres such as comedy, action, science fiction and animation. The country’s total film industry output, including related businesses, is expected to exceed 480 billion yuan in 2026.
The industry is also expanding its links with sports. More than 1,400 cinemas across 266 Chinese cities screened over 28,000 live matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. New policies also aim to promote sports-themed films and joint events, helping cinemas attract more audiences and make better use of their facilities.
