France will deploy military personnel to support police and gendarmes ahead of demonstrations expected on October 24, following violent protests and looting across the country last weekend. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said troops would help secure key locations, allowing police to respond more quickly to potential violence. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu acknowledged failures in intelligence and security planning.
The October 17 demonstrations drew an estimated 550,000 people, according to the government, and at least 3,000 shops were looted nationwide. Authorities are investigating the unrest and considering restrictions on demonstrations deemed likely to become violent. Local curfews have also been extended in some areas.
