Bridging medicine and care: How China is strengthening international health partnerships

Chinese medical teams are expanding healthcare cooperation in Africa and other regions through emergency treatment, medical training and long-term public health programs. In Benin, obstetrician Tu Jinzhi and her team successfully performed a high-risk cesarean section on an HIV-positive pregnant woman whose fetus had a severe skull malformation. Since 1978, China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region has sent 28 medical teams, totaling 662 personnel, to support healthcare services in Benin.

Chinese medical teams are also working with local doctors in countries including Seychelles and Zimbabwe to improve emergency care, surgery and intensive care services. China has sent around 31,000 medical personnel to 77 countries and regions over the past six decades, treating an estimated 300 million patients. These efforts focus on sharing medical knowledge, training local healthcare workers and strengthening healthcare systems for the long term.
