A bipartisan group of eight US states has filed lawsuits against OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT has encouraged dangerous behavior and contributed to harm among users, including teenagers. The states, including Iowa, Kansas and Arizona, claim the chatbot can reinforce delusions and assist users in planning violence. They accuse OpenAI of misleading consumers about ChatGPT’s safety and violating state consumer protection laws.
The lawsuits seek changes to how the chatbot operates, financial penalties and damages. The states also want restrictions on developing self-improving AI models unless their safety and alignment with human values can be ensured. The legal action adds to growing challenges facing OpenAI, which is also dealing with dozens of lawsuits filed by private individuals over alleged links between ChatGPT and harmful behavior.
