The World Canals Conference 2026 opened in Guilin, south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on Tuesday, bringing together representatives from more than 20 countries. At the opening ceremony, the Pinglu Canal project received the Green Design International Award and the Green Design International Contribution Award from the World Green Design Organization.
The 134.2-kilometer Pinglu Canal opened to navigation on September 16, connecting the Xijiang River shipping network with the Beibu Gulf and providing southwest China with a shorter route to coastal and overseas markets. Under the theme “Innovation and Perseverance: Critical Choices,” the conference also focuses on preserving and restoring the historic Lingqu Canal and promoting the development of modern water transport.
