American AI developers, including OpenAI and Anthropic, can share new AI models with Britain’s AI Security Institute for safety testing before public release without violating the Trump administration’s policy, the Telegraph reported on Sunday. The administration has reversed an earlier decision that discouraged such cooperation.
The move allows greater cooperation between the US and Britain on AI safety as governments seek to manage the risks of increasingly powerful technology. Britain established its AI Security Institute after the world’s first AI safety summit in 2023 to test advanced models and assess potential misuse. Trump has repeatedly opposed binding AI safety requirements, but his newly launched AI task force said on Friday that developers must report security incidents involving their models.
