France has suspended the use of stun grenades in student protests after a 15-year-old boy lost his hand during a clash with riot police. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the weapons would be suspended for high-school protests while the incident is investigated. Rights groups, unions and students have accused police of using excessive force.
The protests began over poor school conditions, including teacher shortages, damaged buildings and declining education results. More than 500 schools remain closed, while protests have also spread to Belgium, where students are demanding better education conditions and lower costs. Similar teacher protests are also taking place in Portugal and Spain.
