Japan has strongly protested to the United States after a US Marine was arrested in Okinawa over the suspected robbery and killing of a local woman. The 20-year-old suspect, Devin Ballard, has been sent to prosecutors and denies the allegations. Japan is calling for full cooperation with the investigation, stricter discipline among US military personnel and stronger measures to prevent similar incidents.
The case has renewed long-running concerns in Okinawa over crimes involving US military personnel. Japanese officials have raised the issue with US authorities, while protests were also held in Tokyo. Official figures show Okinawa police recorded 101 criminal cases involving US military personnel, civilian workers and their families in 2025, the highest annual figure since 2003.
