The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Francis Halzen for his major contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos from space. Working at the University of Wisconsin, Halzen helped develop the idea of using Antarctic ice to detect these tiny particles.
IceCube uses light sensors buried in about one cubic kilometer of ice at the South Pole to study neutrinos from powerful events in the distant universe. Halzen, the sole physics laureate this year, will receive the full prize of 12 million Swedish kronor, or about $1.1 million.
