Hundreds of French high schools are expected to remain closed or partly closed for a second week as student protests continue over poor school conditions, overcrowding and teacher shortages. Around 400 to 500 schools are expected to be affected on Monday, while a nationwide day of demonstrations has been planned for Tuesday.
The protests began in late September near Paris and have since spread across the country, with clashes, injuries and property damage reported. Authorities said about 5,000 people, mostly teenagers, have been arrested since last Monday. Police have urged students to end school blockades and protest peacefully, while security officials are concerned that Tuesday’s demonstrations could lead to further violence.
