Qatar said Tuesday that it is continuing mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, exchanging messages and holding meetings to help narrow their differences. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said discussions have taken place in recent days, including during the UN General Assembly in New York, and stressed that Doha sees a peaceful solution as the only option.
Tensions remain high as the conflict enters its eighth month, with disagreements over Iran’s nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz still unresolved. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said U.S. warships had moved at least 500 kilometers away from the Strait, while the U.S. continues to maintain military pressure on Iran. Meanwhile, fighting involving Iran-aligned Houthi forces and Saudi-backed forces in Yemen has added to regional tensions and concerns over oil supplies. Oil prices fell 2.5 percent on Tuesday as investors watched for signs of recovering Middle Eastern exports.
