Mid-Autumn Festival holiday highlights vibrant cultural activities, tourism spending

China’s Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, is traditionally a time for family reunions, moon-viewing and cultural activities. During this year’s three-day holiday, cities across China held traditional performances, lantern displays and other festive events, while nighttime cultural tourism also became popular.

The holiday also brought a major boost to domestic travel. China recorded 17.139 million railway passenger trips on the first day, while average daily highway traffic was expected to reach about 41 million vehicles. Travel bookings increased 18 percent compared with the same period during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, with short-distance trips making up more than 60 percent of bookings. Family gatherings also contributed to holiday spending, with online orders for reunion dinners rising more than 105 percent year on year.
