Xi Jinping says China, US should be partners, not rivals

Chinese President Xi Jinping said China and the United States should be partners rather than rivals as he arrived in the U.S. on Wednesday for a state visit from September 23 to 25. Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were welcomed by U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, at Joint Base Andrews.

In his written speech, Xi said the two countries have long-standing ties and closely connected interests, adding that China’s development and Trump’s goal of making America great again can complement each other and benefit the world. He called for a stable relationship based mainly on cooperation, with competition and differences managed peacefully. Xi also said he looked forward to discussing major bilateral and global issues with Trump and meeting people from different parts of American society to strengthen friendship. He expressed confidence that the visit would produce positive results and help build a more stable China-U.S. relationship.
