U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday that Washington is in constant communication with Yemen’s Houthi group and that the group has agreed not to fight the United States. His comments came as tensions between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia increased, raising concerns about the conflict spreading further and adding to instability in the Middle East. The U.S. State Department issued a security alert, warning of possible escalation and advising Americans to remain vigilant.
At the same time, tensions between the United States and Iran also increased. Trump warned that Iran could face severe economic consequences or changes to its leadership if it failed to reach an agreement with Washington. Iran has said it is prepared for further confrontation while still keeping diplomatic options open. Iran’s military has also increased its readiness along the country’s borders.
Qatar is meanwhile trying to help restart talks between the United States and Iran. Qatari officials said Washington has indicated that it wants a deal, with regional stability and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz among the main goals. Iran, however, said it would not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until conditions linked to a June agreement are met. A U.S. blockade of Iranian ports has also increased economic pressure by restricting Iran’s ability to sell oil.
