Iran to announce ‘restricted zone’ outside Strait of Hormuz

Iran says it will soon create a “restricted zone” around the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials warned that ships entering the area without coordinating with Tehran could face sanctions, including problems with insurance and future passage through the waterway. Iran also says it is working with Oman to create a new shipping corridor through the strait, but the route would remain under Iranian management.

Iranian officials say the Strait of Hormuz is currently closed and have rejected US claims that ships are still passing through. Iran also says it recently tested a new missile near a US aircraft carrier as a warning to the US.

Tensions remain high between the two countries. Iran’s parliament speaker warned that any further US aggression would receive a faster and stronger response, saying the country would no longer follow a policy of “proportionate” retaliation. Credit : CGTN
