Far-right AfD scores record win in German state election

The far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD, has won the state election in Saxony-Anhalt with a record 44.4 percent of the vote, according to an exit poll. The CDU, which had won the previous election, fell sharply to 18.4 percent from 37.1 percent in 2021.

The AfD is expected to win 39 of the state parliament’s 83 seats, just short of the majority needed to govern alone. However, other major parties have ruled out forming a coalition with the AfD, leaving uncertainty over how the next state government will be formed. The result has been described by CDU officials as a major warning for the party. Credit : CGTN
