UNEP urges sustained action to cap global warming, avert climate breakdown

A United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) report launched in Nairobi warns that global temperatures are increasingly likely to temporarily exceed the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree-Celsius warming limit, risking irreversible ecological tipping points, extreme climate shocks, and severe economic collapse. UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen emphasized that while a near-term breach is probable, permanent exceedance can still be avoided by drastically cutting greenhouse gas emissions—including methane and carbon dioxide—and strengthening resilience. To minimize the duration and magnitude of any temperature overshoot, the report urges governments, industries, and societies to implement simultaneous mitigation and adaptation strategies, accelerate the transition to clean energy, and secure robust multilateral cooperation, political resolve, and sustained financing.
