August 14 marks International Memorial Day for Comfort Women, honoring victims of Japan’s wartime military sexual slavery and calling for justice and peace. An estimated 400,000 women from across Asia were forced or coerced into the system during World War II, with China among the most heavily affected. Decades later, survivors and their families continue to seek recognition, apologies and reparations. UN experts have urged Japan to address the issue and preserve the historical memory of the victims.
