Iran says Strait of Hormuz stays closed unless US accepts its conditions

Iran said the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed unless the United States accepts Tehran’s conditions, rejecting President Donald Trump’s claim that Washington has complete control over the strategic waterway.

The US Central Command said its naval blockade was still in effect, with 59 commercial vessels rerouted, three disabled and two boarded for inspections as of August 12.

The standoff comes as US-Iran talks remain deadlocked over the strait, Iran’s nuclear program, compensation for the conflict and frozen Iranian assets.

Trump has demanded compensation from Iran for American deaths, while Iranian officials have made similar demands against the US, citing decades of military actions and sanctions.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged both sides to return to dialogue and negotiations, saying a lasting agreement is needed to restore regional stability and protect freedom of navigation.
