China is stepping up efforts to become a global leader in science and technology as part of its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030). President Xi Jinping has emphasized that scientific and technological innovation is essential to China’s modernization and its goal of achieving greater self-reliance by 2035. Throughout the year, Xi has called for stronger support for key technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics and information technology. China is also increasing investment in research, encouraging scientists to contribute to national development and expanding its role in global innovation. At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Xi highlighted the importance of international cooperation and announced new initiatives aimed at promoting the responsible development and governance of AI worldwide.
