EU ministers seek tougher migration response after Ceuta influx

EU interior ministers called for stronger action against migrant smuggling and improved return policies after around 72,000 migrants entered Spain’s Ceuta enclave from Morocco last week. The ministers discussed measures including better intelligence sharing, stronger border controls, and closer cooperation with non-EU countries.

The crisis has left 75 people dead, while around 70,000 migrants have reportedly returned to Morocco. EU officials blamed smuggling networks and misinformation for the surge, while Morocco denied responsibility. Spain continues to manage the remaining migrants in Ceuta, including thousands of minors, with additional government support announced for shelters and care.
