Japan’s Defense Ministry has released its 2026 defense white paper, describing the regional security environment as increasingly severe and identifying China as its “greatest strategic challenge.” The report supports Japan’s plans to strengthen its military capabilities and potentially revise key security policies later this year.
The white paper highlights Japan’s deployment of long-range missiles with counterstrike capabilities, as well as its efforts to develop hypersonic weapons, expand the use of artificial intelligence and unmanned systems, and strengthen the country’s defense industry. Analysts say these moves reflect Japan’s continuing efforts to accelerate its military buildup.
