Two firefighting helicopters collided while battling a wildfire near Athens, Greece, killing two crew members. The blaze, which destroyed more than 100 homes, was reportedly caused by sparks from power lines, and authorities have launched an investigation while making arrests over suspected negligence.
Wildfires in parts of France and Spain showed signs of easing, but drought and falling water levels continued to disrupt Europe, affecting river transport and power generation. In the United States, wildfires in Washington state forced around 60,000 people to evacuate and destroyed hundreds of homes, while major fires continued in Idaho and Oregon.
