EU can give Morocco more border support, von der Leyen tells Spain after Ceuta spat

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for the European Union to strengthen border controls and increase support for Morocco following the recent influx of around 50,000 migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. She described Morocco as a key strategic partner in combating illegal migration and suggested expanding early-warning systems and providing additional financial and technical assistance.

The crisis has become the first major test of the EU’s new Migration Pact, which took effect in June and was designed to improve cooperation among member states on migration management. However, critics argue that the response has exposed divisions within the bloc and highlighted the risks of relying heavily on neighboring countries to control migration flows. Analysts have warned that such dependence could give transit countries greater political leverage while strengthening support for anti-immigration movements across Europe.
